Whether you use paper patterns, you print a pdf or you use the pdf version on your computer or tablet, or maybe even from a book or magazine, the Quilt Planning Page is a great tool to help plan and keep your quilt making process in order.

When I’m planning a quilt, I get all these ideas for just the right fabrics, just the right quilting panto design, but by the time I sit down to work on, I’ve forgotten what I had planned. Or even if I get things started, I get distracted or life pulls me away, and when I come to those WIP’s and UFO’s, I have forgotten what I had planned to do. This tool will help keep all your thoughts and ideas together with the fabric and pattern so you can pick up where you left off.

Sometimes I will print this 2 pages per sheet so I can have everything on one side. Then I can fold it in half and bring it with me if I’m going shopping for supplies. I will use heavier weight cardstock so that it doesn’t dog-ear as quickly.

When I finish the quilt, I can then punch holes in it to store in a binder for reference later it, so if I ever need to repair a quilt I’ll know what fabric or thread I used.

Here are a few tips on how to use this handy reference page:

What is your process for planning a new quilt?

Select your pattern, and give your project a name. Is it for a special occasion? Is it a gift for someone special? Or a special project?

Select your fabrics. Are you using a fabric line, scrappy fabrics, solids, do you have a background fabric, are there primary, secondary, tertiary fabrics?
Include swatches if you have scraps to color match while shopping,

What size are you making and how much fabric do you need?
What will you use for binding?
What will you use for backing?
What thread will you use to piece the blocks?

What quilting pantograph or design will you use? Do you send your quilts to a long armer or do your quilting yourself? Or do you hand quilt? Or machine quilt on a domestic machine?
What thread type and color will you use?
What type of batting will you use?

Do you make any adjustments or changes to quilt patterns or create your own? There is a design section to sketch out changes or the whole quilt if you need to see how it will look, and a notes section to track important details as you are working.
